Our favorite freshwater game fish know to most of us as the Muskie or Musky comes from the Esocidae family, or the pike family. And was well known to America's native population long before Europeans arrived.

The name Muskie originally comes from the Ojibwa word maashkinoozhe. Taken from there by French explorers - the name became maskinonge and eventually Muskellunge. There are also a number of trivial names for the muskie such as "The Ohio River Pike", "The Alleghany River Pike" or the "Jack Pike".
