There are only three natural types of muskie; the clear, spotted, and barred muskie. However a new type of muskie has been introduced called the Tiger muskie.

The clear muskie has few, faint markings near the tail and is otherwise clear colored. The Spotted muskie shows flakes or spots of colors throughout. The Barred muskie has vertical lines running through the length of its body. The hybrid Tiger Muskie usually has a mix of vertical bars with spots mixed in and interlocked throughout. The background color of the Tiger muskie is usually a lighter tone. The northern pike has horizontal, stretched oval sports running throughout the length of it's body. The background of the northern pike is usually a darker color.
